Speed Dating in the Literary World

RWA Workshop - Speed Dating Editors and Agents: Jazzing up your Chapter’s Conference

The Silicon Valley RWA chapter walked conference goers through the concept of speed dating for agents and editors.  With this concept of course, you are meant to interchange selling yourself for a mate to selling your full or partial book for publishing in, at most, five minutes.

Among some of the do’s and don’ts of Speed Dating Editors and Agents chapter president, Kathrynn Dennis, mentioned were:

Assign three to five minutes for each pitch and then add an additional two minutes to allow writers to go from agent to agent or editor to editor

Don’t charge for your speed dating session

Practice with your chapter members so that when the event happens, your chapter members can act as leaders for the evening

Providing the odd cocktail aids both those on the pitching and receiving side to relax!

Kathrynn Dennis did point out often during the workshop that people make decisions about what they will buy and you as a writer in a period of only 30 seconds and to this she says practice, practice, practice.  Hone your pitch.

Kathrynn Dennis has offered to email anyone interested in receiving her power point rules of thum on the concept of  ‘Speed Dating Editors and Agents’ – contact her here with your request: Kathrynn.dennis@gmail.com
